By Amee Desai, Member of the TGGP Board of Directors
My name is Amee Desai and I am a proud member of the Board of Directors for The Grateful Garment Project. I joined the board towards the end of 2015, not knowing what I was getting into. I had no idea what would be required of me and what sort of use I would actually be to this amazing organization. Over the past few months, I learned that a major event for the organization is the Walk 4 Dignity at Sevathon, happening on June 26, 2016. The Walk 4 Dignity will help raise awareness and encourage support for victims of sexual violence.
For me, the Walk 4 Dignity is going to be a 10k run. Let me start by saying that by no means would I ever consider myself a runner. When I was younger and required to run for Physical Education classes, I was lucky to survive that 1 mile run. My goal in life has been to run, without stopping, a full mile. Somehow, last year I decided to attempt my very first 5k. Clearly, I aim big! Somehow the bug caught and I did two more 5k’s after that first one. With three 5k’s under my belt, I got cocky and decided to attempt a 10k as well. I had trained religiously for the 5k’s but went in unprepared for that 10k. I was amazed that I was actually able to finish that first 10k. The common factor between all those runs was that each and every one of those runs, I did them for me. The thing is, now, it’s not just about me. I need this to be about more than just me.
This year, I want to do something more; I want to walk for the victims of sexual violence. I want to complete that 10k knowing that my efforts are helping create awareness about an issue that goes unspoken. It’s not just about me anymore – I want to Walk 4 Dignity.
